A new treatment stopped the course of the disease for 5 years in nearly half of the patients participating in a new study published in the journal JAMA Neurology. Be nonaggressive! It can only be administered to a category of patients.
This is the second study to reveal the promising results of immunoablation and autologous transplantation of hemopoietic stem cells in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. This technique consists of completely destroying (using heavy chemotherapy) the immune system of the patients to avoid its attack to the nerve cells. Subsequently, autologous hematopoietic cells are administered to them to completely renew the immune system.
A study of more than 200 patients.
The treatment was tested on 281 patients from 13 different countries between 2005 and 2016. The patients were suffering from advanced forms of multiple sclerosis and the conventional treatments had not improved their condition and the lesions of the disease. This resulted in almost half (46%) of the disease being stopped for at least 5 years. The authors of the study indicate that some patients have even seen their condition improve.
Some have not survived treatment.
However, 8 patients died within 100 days of treatment. The heavy chemotherapy that allows the complete destruction of the immune system was not borne by those patients who died of infections. The study revealed that older people with the most severe forms of the disease were the most likely to not survive the treatment. Conversely, the younger patients with less severe forms of the disease are those who responded best to the treatment.

The risk of death must be taken into account.
For Professor Paolo Muraro, co-author of the study, this work is the first to affirm that this heavy treatment can “freeze” the course of the disease for at least 5 years. The study also indicates that this treatment is even more effective in patients with inflammations in the central nervous system and spinal cord.
However, He said that this very cumbersome treatment can kill while it is administered to patients who are not in immediate danger of death.
Multiple sclerosis affects 120,000 people in India.
These results are very promising but more in-depth work needs to be undertaken. This new study did not include a placebo group. The comparison between patients treated with this new technique and patients who received a conventional treatment could not therefore be made.
Multiple sclerosis is estimated to affect 120,000 people in France and millions worldwide. This is the most common disabling neurological disease in young adults. In the majority of cases, the first symptoms appear between 20 and 40 years.
