What your breath tells you about your health.

You feel bad from the mouth or a delicate soul has the courage to tell you about it? Beyond the discomfort it provides, bad breath can also be the sign of more serious illnesses. About 20% of the population would be affected. Here are some possibilities.

Gingivitis or periodontitis.

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum due to the presence of bacteria, which infiltrate into the bone at the root of the tooth and destroy it. If left untreated, it can turn into periodontitis, the gums would severely affected and the teeth can become detached. These stagnant and non-eliminated bacteria are the cause of bad oral odors. Pregnancy, tobacco and menopause can cause gingivitis.

What is the treatment?

Good oral hygiene helps reduce and prevent the development of gingivitis. First visit the dentist to make the diagnosis of gingivitis and check its degree of evolution by measuring the depth of the gingiva-dental furrow (the space between the gum and the tooth). The specialist will use it to carry out a scaling (to be carried out every 6 months to a year). Finally, you should wash your teeth 2 to 3 times a day for at least 2 minutes as recommended by the Oral Health Union. You can add a little sodium bicarbonate powder that has the power to reduce bad odors. Do not forget to pass a dental floss between the teeth in order to eliminate the food residues which can also be the origin of bad odors if stagnated too long in the mouth. Amino acids from food proteins actually give a sulfur-like smell to the breath.

A busy language.

Bad odors can also emanate from bacteria on the tongue. The top of the tongue, badly irrigated with saliva can effectively lead to putrefaction of bacteria.

What is the treatment?

Make a few mouthwashes that you can perform daily to refresh the mouth with menthol or fluoride. There are other products whose components (especially tin fluoride) inactivate the bacteria and slow down the bacterial metabolism and thus prevent the formation of malodorous substances. They should be used only for ten days so as not to unbalance the oral flora. Also think about brushing your tongue. The brushing of the tongue is done from back to front to remove deposits that cover it, with a tongue scraper or the silicone surface of the toothbrush. Never use the bristles of the brush as they could create micro-lesions on the tongue where the bacteria could slip.

What if it was an abscess and tooth decay?

A tooth decay, an abscess just like the crater left by a tooth extraction can be a bacterial focus. Regular dental check-ups are necessary to detect sick or decayed teeth.

What is the treatment?

Have the decayed teeth properly treated, and make regular mouthwashes. If the infection is declared, the doctor will extract the tooth or treat the abscess. Often the dentist also prescribes an antibiotic for ten days in order to eradicate the infection.

Check your dental prostheses.

Inadequately cleaned or worn too long, dental prostheses can release very bad odors in the long run. Especially if you tend to keep it in the mouth during the night. This is again the fault of the bacteria nestled in the recesses of the prosthesis.

What is the treatment?

To have an irreproachable hygiene by reviewing the instructions of cleaning of a prosthesis. First, do not wear it for more than 24 hours in a row. Next, think about cleaning it after each meal by brushing it with a toothbrush. Every night immerse it in an antiseptic bath (in the form of an effervescent tablet to be diluted in a glass of water) for 15 minutes.

Often a problem of gastric acidity.

When the valve between the stomach and the esophagus is defective, the acid contained in the stomach (used for digestion) rises in the supine position overnight along the digestive tract to the mouth, often releasing a nauseous gas.

What is the treatment?

The ENT specialist will first examine the vocal cords. If they are red and swollen at their posterior part, it is indeed the sign of a gastro-esophageal reflux. He will then prescribe an anti-reflux treatment or an acid anti-secretory in the form of tablets to take 15 minutes before the meals. Often, everything goes back to normal after one month of treatment. If this is not the case, the specialist will carry out more thorough examinations. By directing the patient to the gastroenterologist to perform gastroscopy or pH metering (pH measurement in the esophagus and stomach). He may be diagnosed with ulcer, gastritis or esophagitis.

Generally, the anti-secretory acid treatment is effective, unless there is a germ in the stomach called Helicobacter pylori, which then also requires antibiotic treatment

When the tonsils make it bad.

Sometimes, to find the source of bad breath, you have to go for a closer look at the tonsils. In young patients between the ages of 20 and 30, they contain crypts in which nauseous germs nest. All sorts of food debris come together in this place. They ferment and form a whitish paste called the casein.

What is the treatment?

For the moment, you can, by simply pressing the amygdala with the handle of a fork, empty the amygdala of this whitish ball. But very quickly, over the course of the weeks, the casein will be reformed. The radical and definitive solution remains the partial or total ablation of the tonsils. The operation is performed either by laser (in an outpatient setting) or by surgery under general anesthesia (with a hospitalization of at least two days).

See the side of the sinuses.

A few foreign bodies may be nestled at the bottom of the sinuses without any real appreciation. This is the case of the dental paste used by the dentist during a treatment. It sometimes happens that a little of this residue passes through the root of the tooth in the sinus. Being stuck several days or weeks, they cause a bacterial proliferation and in the long run give off a smelly odor. Flow also takes place in the mouth.

What is the treatment?

The ENT specialist will examine by a clinical and fibroscopic examination at the entrance of the sinuses and the back of the throat. If it detects a yellow, green or brown discharge, it can ask for a scanner or a radio of the sinuses. A surgical operation under general anesthesia will then be necessary to remove the dental paste. The purpose of the keratotomy is to widely open the sinus in the nose, to allow the purulent secretions to escape into the nasal cavity. The operation lasts about one hour and requires two days of hospitalization.

Check your medications.

Some treatments have the particularity of drying the mouth. This is the case of antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics and antihypertensive having an action on the parasympathetic nervous system that controls the salivary glands. The saliva rich in antibacterial substances no longer sufficiently irrigates the mouth and the bacteria settle in large numbers, accompanied by their fetid odor.

What is the treatment?

Think of drinking water or infusions of peppermint regularly to properly moisten the inside of the mouth and thus contribute to the elimination of bacteria. You can also chew sugar-free chewing gum during the day to promote saliva secretion and / or consume citrus fruit that triggers saliva production.

What if your liver was congested?

A fickle liver, too heavy meals, a period of fatigue can cause a halitosis usually generated by the absorption of food containing nitrogen. This is the case for proteins. Generally, this nitrogen is eliminated by the liver and kidneys. If the liver is defective, this operation cannot be done. The nitrogen then rises from the stomach to escape through the mouth.

What is the treatment?

The gastroenterologist will prescribe a blood test to identify the liver enzymes in the liver and a liver scan. Halitosis may be a sign of hepatic impairment, cirrhosis or hepatitis.

At home, facilitate the work of the liver by first consuming foods easily processed by the liver like vegetables and fruits. Avoid consuming too much protein. Take advantage of it also to reduce the consumption of alcohol and tobacco that are conducive to liver dysfunction.

Sometimes the pre-menstrual cycle involved.

Just before menstruation, a hormonal change occurs in women, leading in particular to a larger production of dental plaque that promotes the proliferation of bacteria. This hormonal change also influences the intestinal flora and charges the sulfur blast.

What is the treatment?

Consider irreproachable dental and oral hygiene by regularly washing your teeth and making mouthwashes. This does not address the actual cause of bad breath but may mask it during this short period each month before your periods.

Beware of protein diets.

They are very effective at finding the line in record time but they have the disadvantage of promoting bad breath. Main responsible: the principle itself is the protein diet high in meat, fish, dairy, eggs and virtually none in carbohydrates. In the absence of carbohydrates, the body will burn fat and release into the blood waste called ketone bodies. Very volatile, they will also release into the airways and give a bad odor to your breath.

What is the treatment?

Put your pain in patience and wait for the end of the diet because this acetone odor proves that the diet works. Once completed, carbohydrate recovery in reasonable amount should restore your good breath.
